Over the spring we welcomed our fourth baby at home. During recovery I knew my body needed high protein and organ meats to provide as much nutrition as possible. I made hamburgers with a mix of beef liver and ground beef. I also bought two ribeyes cut at 1.5 inches. I underestimated the size ofContinue reading “Smoked Tallow”

Springing – Fourth annum
This article is one of those which is general, rather than topical. I did this last springing. So I will share some projects and doodles with you. I do not remember how I wrote that last article, but I will give you an update as best I can. I get stuck inside each spring moonContinue reading “Springing – Fourth annum”
Anvil post
The tree we felled was cut into logs. One of these logs I cut down to about four or five feet. I had planned for some time to use it for my anvil. So using waste motor oil we saved from oil changes, I treated the timber. I stand the timber in a five gallonContinue reading “Anvil post”
Paint
Painting shields is like ketchup and fries. You can have them plain, but together they are more satisfying. The shield seen in the earlier article complete, I played with different paints on the face. I started with tempera, which is made with pigment and the liquid from the yolk of an egg.

We were burning up some waste wood infected with mold. This task is quite easy, givenContinue reading “Family”

I am writing this early, in preparation for Friday. I have already done some fill work on the new hearth for the smithy. So as it goes along I will add to this until it is done. Hence, “Chapter 1” in the title. Really it is more chapter two, but we will call what hasContinue reading “Hearth- Chapter 1”
Oyster knives
Today I was wondering about what I should write to you. I mean to stick to my plan. After a little thought, I remembered you have never seen the knives I recently made. This was a lot of fun. A good friend of mine needed a pair of knives for shucking oysters. He had theContinue reading “Oyster knives”
Hearth
Among many jobs and duties, I have neglected to write. Having recently been reminded of it, I am endeavoring to correct this. In the smithy I am building a new hearth. I took pictures of the process so far as it has gone. There will be a sequel to this with the finished product. InContinue reading “Hearth”
